Electric vehicles call for a different approach to damage assessment than combustion cars. The battery sits in the floor pan, it is the single most expensive component – and its condition decides the value of the car. As a certified appraiser with high-voltage qualification, we assess electric and hybrid vehicles of any make.

Why it is different

The most expensive damage is the damage you cannot see.

On a combustion car you can essentially see what has been damaged after a collision. On an electric vehicle that is not the case. The high-voltage battery is built in as a flat unit in the floor pan and enclosed in a protection tray. Grounding on a kerb, a rear-end impact at moderate speed or a knock while manoeuvring can deform that tray without anything showing on the bodywork.

The consequences appear with a delay: falling range, fault messages in the battery management system and, in the worst case, thermal problems. If they surface months later, the connection with the collision is barely provable any more – and the insurer settled long ago.

That is why, on every electric vehicle after a collision, we inspect the underbody, the battery protection tray, the insulation resistance and the fault memory of the battery management system. What is not documented does not get paid for later.

Battery condition (SoH analysis)

Measurement of the high-voltage battery's state of health. We determine the actual remaining capacity and assess the degree of degradation – decisive for residual value and for any warranty claim.

High-voltage system safety

Insulation resistance, high-voltage cabling and the battery management system checked for hidden defects. After a collision, high-voltage damage can stay concealed.

Collision damage assessment

The battery sits in the floor pan. Even light rear-end impacts can cause expensive damage. We find what a visual inspection misses.

Residual value & diminished value

Battery warranty, software level, charge cycles and remaining range move the value of the vehicle considerably. Our report accounts for every EV-specific value factor.

Software & OBD diagnostics

Reading the fault memory, analysing charging and driving data and checking for manipulated odometer readings – particularly relevant on used electric vehicles.

Charging system & wallbox

The charging port, the on-board charger and compatibility with the charging infrastructure are checked. Where a charging incident has caused damage, we produce the full damage report.

Qualification

Certified for high-voltage vehicles.

Work on high-voltage systems requires a qualification of its own – not every vehicle appraiser is permitted to open or isolate an electric vehicle. Our practice is certified for electric and hybrid vehicles, including state-of-health analysis of the traction battery.

The technical grounding is a Bachelor of Engineering with a focus on mechanical engineering together with many years in the automotive industry, several of them in a management role in quality assurance. What is a state-of-health analysis and why do I need one?
SoH stands for state of health – the condition of the high-voltage battery. The analysis shows how much usable capacity actually remains. That is decisive for the value of the vehicle, because the battery is the single most expensive component in an electric car. Without a robust SoH figure, neither a residual value nor a diminished value can be properly reasoned.
My electric car looks undamaged after the collision – is a report worth it?
Particularly then. On almost every electric vehicle the battery sits in the floor pan. Even a light rear-end impact or grounding can damage the protection tray or the cell modules without anything being visible from outside. Damage of that kind often only shows up months later – and by then the link to the collision is barely provable.
Do you assess all makes?
Yes, independently of the manufacturer – Tesla, BMW, VW, Mercedes, Audi, Hyundai, Kia, Polestar, Porsche, Renault and others. We are tied to no workshop and no manufacturer.
Who pays for the report after a collision involving an electric car?
Where the collision was not your fault, the other party's liability insurer bears the cost under § 249 of the German Civil Code – exactly as with any other vehicle. For shared fault, comprehensive-insurance claims and pure valuation reports we invoice an agreed fee arranged in advance.
What happens to the battery warranty after a collision?
Manufacturer warranties on the high-voltage battery are usually tied to conditions such as documented servicing and an undamaged structure. A collision can put claims at risk. We document the condition before and after the damage, so that you can evidence to the manufacturer and the insurer what was actually the case.
Is inspecting a high-voltage vehicle dangerous?
Not for you – and for us only safe where the necessary qualification is held. We are certified for work on high-voltage vehicles and observe the prescribed safety distances and isolation procedures. You should not move a damaged electric vehicle yourself, and you should not park it in an enclosed garage.
