Can I choose my own
appraiser?

Yes – after a no-fault accident, you decide who inspects your vehicle. The other party's insurer cannot force an appraiser on you. Here is why that matters and how to use this choice properly.

The clear answer

You have the free choice.

If you were involved in an accident that was not your fault, you may instruct an independent car appraiser of your own choosing. This right to a free choice of appraiser is firmly established – the at-fault party's liability insurer cannot restrict it.

In practice this means: if the other party's insurer calls and offers to "send an appraiser round", you do not have to agree. An appraiser instructed by the opposing side works in the insurer's interest – not yours.

Why it matters
•

Conflict of interest

The opposing insurer's appraiser is paid by the party that wants to pay as little as possible. That is not neutrality.

•

Full extent of the loss

An independent report also captures diminished value, loss of use and hidden damage – items that are easily overlooked.

•

Securing evidence

Your own report documents the damage before any repair. That protects you if the settlement becomes disputed.

Who bears the cost

The party at fault pays – the appraisal too.

After a no-fault accident the appraiser's fee is part of the recoverable loss. Like the repair costs, it is borne by the at-fault party's liability insurer. As the injured party you normally have nothing to pay up front.

The exception is the genuine minor damage: if the loss is clearly below the trivial-damage threshold, a repair estimate may be enough instead of a full report. Where that line lies in your case we clarify beforehand – honestly and with no obligation.

Frequently asked

Answered briefly.

Do I have to accept the opposing insurer's appraiser?
No. After a no-fault accident you choose your own appraiser. The other party's insurer cannot impose one on you.
What does the free choice of appraiser cost me?
Usually nothing. After a no-fault accident the at-fault party's liability insurer bears the appraisal fee as part of the loss.
Does this also apply to a comprehensive-cover claim?
For a self-inflicted comprehensive claim the terms of your policy apply. It is worth checking – we will tell you openly what makes sense.
What if I am partly at fault?
Even with shared liability you may instruct your own appraiser. The cost is then reimbursed in proportion to the liability quota.
